Katarina started skating ice at the age of five. Then, her talent began to emerge and she was invited to Karl-Marx-Stadt's school for special needs. The coach Jutta was also at the school. Breakthrough year Witt's breakthrough came in 1982 when she finished second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt drew the attention of all and she has been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic victory Katarina Wit won gold in ice skating for women during the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after an intensely competitive contest. She won a much closer race four years later. Witt actually fell short of the free-skating competition, but was awarded the gold medal based upon her results in the mandatory figures as well as the short-form program. Witt was the only woman since Sonja Haenie who was a repeat figure skating winner. Hall of Fame Witt, who made it big in the world of film and television acting, then returned to figure skating to compete in the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. While she was not able to win a medal, Witt enchanted her audience despite placing seventh. It was in 1995 that Witt got inducted into World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
